Maybe it was some kind of scientific experiment, regeneration-testing or just a horrible mistake of the tech-team working with a new equipment? Maybe he got a lot of shrapnel pieces or small glass splinters, and instead of making multiple shallow cuts somebody decides to just cut away the upper layer of his skin for better and quicker access? Maybe somebody from the personnel working with him just has a huge blood kink and gets off from rubbing against his skinned muscles? Anything is possible.
The larger parts of his skin are removed, the better.
