Chatter post

For all your discussion needs.

Ground rules:
- Try to keep it loosely trash party related, or at least Cap fandom related.
- Disagreement is fine, nastiness is not.
- Being offended is not carte blanche for nastiness.
- Trashmeme ground rules apply. Read at your own risk, no romanticizing your noncon garbage, no wank about the moral acceptability of noncon kink.
- Body shots, sniper shots, and tetanus shots are all available at the open bar. Party like it's 2014, kids.

Man, this has been my exact experience in many of my previous fandoms. I personally cannot stand rapefics wherein the victim ends up loving it, or falling into a relationship with the rapist, or retroactively consenting, or any of the other thousand ways rape is romanticized and excused. And unfortunately for this dumpster diver, an approximate shitton of rapefic out there falls somewhere in my no-go zone. This is one of the reasons I love the htp so much.

Yes, right? I've been getting my rape fic almost exclusively from here, and I've come to think I don't have any squicks or no-go kinks. But then once in a while I read darkfic elsewhere and I'm like NOPE NOPE NOPE abort abort. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Thinking about it, that goes for mainstream media too, where there's 99% romanticizing of abuse.)

It's hard out there for a kid who needs clear lines of consent in their rapefic.

Oh, man, so much this. Rapefic is so my thing, but I'm really fucking picky about how it's written.

So, man, I love non-con fic and it's like the first thing I search out when I get a new fandom, but I'm weird about it. I like non-con, but I only like straight-up non-con; I can't deal with dub-con unless it's of the sex-pollen, fuck-or-die variety, I can't deal with fic that portrays the rapist as a sympathetic character, especially if they are forgiven by their victim and ESPECIALLY if the plot encourages this, I'm seriously squicked out by psychological manipulation and mindfuck, and I really prefer a victim who resists or is defiant in some way.

Basically, my rape kink is emotional, and it rubs right up against my own ugly personal history, so yeah. If I can find what I want (and oh how the trash party has delivered), I'm golden. But there are so many ways it can go wrong for me.

This is so me I could have gotten blackout drunk, written this comment, and forgotten about it; dub-con is a huge no for me, sympathetic rapists are the BIGGEST NO OF ALL TIME EVER. I need the border between consent and non-consent to be as clear-cut as the edge of a cliff -- which doesn't mean I can only read, like, forcible rape, but there has to be obvious narrative intent to portray what's happening as Not Okay. (htp does this so well: Bucky can be begging for it and yet it's understood on all sides that he doesn't consent.) But your last points about mindfuck and defiant victims are really interesting to me, because that used to be true for me too. In every other fandom I've ever had, I needed the victim to be defiant to the last. Even in non-sexual torture fic, I needed the victim not to break. And then Bucky came along, and... well. Those rules no longer apply. Maybe it's because he canonically did break, and there's really no way to suppose he would have had more than moments of defiance against his tormentors?

But anyway, I feel your pain. I can't express the frustration of reading a rapefic that's going great right up until the point that the victim and the rapist ride off into the sunset together, to the soundtrack of authorial applause.

"htp does this so well: Bucky can be begging for it and yet it's understood on all sides that he doesn't consent."

I need so much more of this than there is tbh. But I can't figure out how to search for it. "Nonconsensual consent" is a promising term but has been taken over by a bizarre combination of rape apologism, fundamentalist Christianity, and hardcore BDSM... Ah, well. I'll find my trash cousins eventually.

And as to the rest of your points: TRUE. The level of romanticization alone... I usually take "dubcon" to mean "rape by emotional coercion," tbh, but the genre does have an unusual number of apologists and people who just don't seem to realize what they're writing. And those people never write anything I really want to read, though I've certainly read plenty of their work over the years...
