Chatter post

For all your discussion needs.

Ground rules:
- Try to keep it loosely trash party related, or at least Cap fandom related.
- Disagreement is fine, nastiness is not.
- Being offended is not carte blanche for nastiness.
- Trashmeme ground rules apply. Read at your own risk, no romanticizing your noncon garbage, no wank about the moral acceptability of noncon kink.
- Body shots, sniper shots, and tetanus shots are all available at the open bar. Party like it's 2014, kids.

Ohman, tumblr is a special special place. Most stuff is easy-ish to shake off, but I feel really weird about the Bucky fictionkins that thinks writing non-con about Bucky is the same as writing non-con about them personally :/ Like I legit don't wanna hurt people with my writing but c'mon, I wasn't ready for people believing themselves to be reincarnations of fictional characters.

Oh, wow, is that really a thing? I mean, I admit that I identify with Bucky more than is probably strictly healthy, but...really?

Yeah, I've seen a few of them now. Anti-HTP posts was how I learned about the whole fictionkin movement thing basically. I really don't want to hurt them with my writing but it's kind of a difficult worldview to navigate around I guess? I mean, I identify with Bucky a lot in that we're similar in a lot of ways and it's part of why I write him, but I... don't think I've BEEN him in a past life or anything so I find it hard to understand and accommodate those that do.

..."fictionkin"?

Fictionkin.

FICTIONKIN

Jesus fucking blue-balled Christ on a goddamn steam-powered pogo stick, do we in fandom not have enough people making fun of us? In the immortal words of one of my favorite fics, Criss de calice de tabarnak d'osti de sacrament!

I think you're being very kind. I myself do not give a single minuscule rat's testicle whether my writing is hurting someone because they believe they used to be Bucky Barnes in a former life, for the love of everything holy. (And I say this as someone who believes in reincarnation, but Jesus Christ.) There is a point at which it becomes a self-inflicted wound.

Massive TMI about me: I think it's less about kindness and more about my personal issues with the whole "people who have been abused are more likely to go on and become abusers themselves" thing. I'm terrified about becoming an abuser so having fanfic basically talked about as a form of abuse freaks me out a lot.

Oh sweetie, at that point you're pretty much dealing with the kind of person who'd sue you because they stubbed their toe on your sidewalk. You're not abusing anyone.

But MCU Bucky was only "invented" a few years ago, were they comics Bucky before or...?
Anyway, wow, being accused of writing non-con about them specifically must have been horrible, sorry you had to experience that.

I chose not to engage them further since, yeah, the accusation was pretty upsetting (I've mostly avoided tumblr after since that seems to be where they hang out) and I didn't want to accidentally escalate the whole thing by letting it show, so I don't know which Bucky specifically they believed themselves to have been. I've tried reading up on what it's about but I'm seriously out of my depth when it comes to that whole thing. Something about multiverses and alternate realities, I don't really get it.
(Seriously, does anyone have any tips for how to politely deal with this brand of anti-HTP? I legit have no clue aside from "anxiously ignore them and hope they go away".)

Raucous laughter, combined with pointing derisively?

I'm sorry, you said "polite".

How about "I'm sorry if this perturbs you, but please be aware that it's not intended to be anything other than complete fiction. It would probably be better for your peace of mind if you just blacklisted my blog entirely."

I can't think of a polite way to phrase "I have enough shit to deal with in my universe, so whichever one you believe your soul comes from is gonna have to get in fucking line."

Ngl, the last one has a lot of appeal.

That's a tough one, anon, and I'm sorry you've had to deal with that. At a certain point there's not anything you can do that you aren't probably already doing: tag your shit and let people make their own choices. Fictionkin or no, if someone is old enough to be on the internet, they're old enough to not read something they know will upset them, and no one gets to dictate the (non)existence of certain types of fiction. :(
