Oh okay I'm commenting on my own thread because I rediscovered this quote from Ivar Lovaas, the founder of ABA:

"You see, you start pretty much from scratch when you work with an autistic child. You have a person in the physical sense—they have hair, a nose and a mouth—but they are not people in the psychological sense. One way to look at the job of helping autistic kids is to see it as a matter of constructing a person. You have the raw materials, but you have to build the person.”

I really enjoy thinking about the Winter Soldier's handlers/techs this way, and the way they could have seen their dehumanization of him as being ethically excused by something they've rationalized about the Soldier (he has a hair, a nose, and a mouth, but...).

Oh my god that is the creepiest quote, how was that man even real D: I can definitely see the WS's handlers using that kind of thinking. And they let that man "treat" kids, what even.

/autistic anon that got diagnosed at fourteen and managed to be a person all on their own because holy shit creepy old dead dude, we are and have always been people, what a creep
