What it says up top. Either Hydra pimped out the Winter Soldier to the Red Room as part of a supersoldier breeding program, or Nat is the result of a female agent's dalliance with the Soldier, and Hydra sold the baby. Nat doesn't know her origins; Bucky never knew what became of his baby. They find out the truth together in the present day from some recovered files.

I am aaall about the awkwardness and pain and weird family feelings that would ensue. How would Natasha, who is so kind and grounded but still wrestles with her identity and history, take this as a new part of her story? How would she feel knowing this traumatized sort-of-friend is her biological father, and would she worry she had become just another reminder of his trauma? On Bucky's part, would that be true? Or is there sweetness to be found here as well?

+ even if we're going the breeding program route, Bucky's semen wasn't extracted medically, or at least not exclusively. I'd prefer for Natasha to be the result of a sexual rape

+ for that matter, the more horrific and traumatizing that rape was, the better. If there are details or terrible implications about what a nightmare Bucky experienced in the files, available for Nat's reading pleasure, that would also be great

How do you feel about the fact that in the comics (spoiler alert!) ....

Were they romantically involved in your prompt at some point and possibly don't remember (due to wipes, etc) or do you prefer not dealing with the whole icky incest factor in a fill?

No incest factor, I'd say, they're platonic friends. :)

I feel like if there's incest then that's what the whole story is about, you know? What a bomb to get dropped on you! And at the same time, if Nat and Bucky are in love, then they have a solid shared ground for emotional support in one another. It's a different vibe altogether if they're just friends, or not even friends, their connection is that they're both friends with Steve. Then they have to grapple with knowing weighty intimate traumatic shit about each other without the safety of preexisting intimacy. So it has room to be so so painful, but even so, if they manage to scrape some good out of it, it could be beautiful too. What if Natasha had been imagining she had a normal childhood for at least a few years, and to find that even her conception was violent is a blow; but gradually she could come to get to know Bucky better and know his kindness and find a kind of pride in springing from that. Same for Bucky, right? If at first he was just horrified, but as he gets to understand and appreciate Natasha, it's almost like: at least something good came out of that horror show. They'll never have a father-daughter relationship, but... found family feels!!

Mind you, now I'm imagining a scenario where this hits right at the start of a sexual relationship--post-WS, they hook up, or start to, but Bucky flashes back to being raped by a woman, it's awful, Nat backs off and is trying to comfort him--but before they have a chance to try again they figure out that that was Natasha's mom and EVERYTHING IS RUINED FOREVER?

...Maybe no incest then.

A traumatic horrible rape? Let's say they gave Bucky something to induce priapism. At first it functions like sex pollen, and he's hot for it for the first two, three, even four women. But even as the lust abates, the erection doesn't. Instead, he's just helplessly hard, getting tired and miserable, starting to beg for mercy as woman after woman mounts him, and he comes and comes, until he's raw. When it hurts too much to come, that's when they bring out the cattle prod.
