He was probably off on that trip to the Grand Canyon that he and Bucky always talked about taking someday. (Whether he was alone on this trip, and whether that had anything to do with going so thoroughly off the grid that not even his fellow Avengers could track him down, is a matter best left to speculation. *cough*)
