This is. Too much. like a good soldier, he listened but Sam had been out of the game for too long, trying to be a civilian and it’s the “trying” that absolutely kills me, like he wasn’t quite there- which I guess he wasn’t, if he can drop it that fast and staying out wasn’t even an option- but then he’s not ready to be SOLDIER again yet either, he’s not all the way in either world and it’s not FAIR! All of this visceral beautifully-written pain, fuck. Sam thinks he just has to last and the terrible thing is he will but only as a game. There’s no way Rumlow makes it to the Council, right? But because he stopped to enjoy himself. Sam can’t outlast him in endurance or pain tolerance because Rumlow’s having fun</>, he’s “showing off,” and husky and smiling, oh shit, shadow falling over him like a pall, this is perfect. I’ve bitten my nails to the quick already.
