Fill: Guide Me Safely Through The Night (2/6)

It took a long time for reality to come back to it. For longer than it had registered, life had consisted of sleeping with the occasional flash of lucidity which faded after a couple of moments. The angel was a constant presence beside it. Every time it woke the angel was waiting for its confession, and for a long time it was too tired to get the words out.

It didn't know how long it was until it woke properly. But looking down at its body, it could see it had gained a little weight - it was not as gaunt as it had been. The stub of its left arm was still swathed in bandages, but there was not the constant pain that for so long had been the company of every moment of its life, its only friend.

The angel was its friend now.

The angel was there, just like it had known he would be.
"Hey you..." The angel smiled. "You've been asleep for a while, you know that?"
"I'm sorry." It replied instantly, worried in case it would be punished. In case it had lost its opportunity to repent, and would be punished by being sent back to the devil, or by having its name taken away. Bucky. Bucky was important. Bucky gave it meaning, gave it something more than pain.
"Didn't mean to waste your time." It whispered, trying to keep its voice steady. The angel sat nearby, reaching out to rest his hand on top of one of the demon's.

"It's alright Bucky. You aren’t wasting my time, it's alright..." The angel promised, smiling as he saw the demon relax at the use of its name. He reached out to brush some hair from the demon's face. "You're safe now, I promise... Where were you? I looked all over for you."

"Hell." The demon said honestly, its voice flat. It would confess. It would not lie, it would never lie, not to the angel, not about this. The angel smiled, and it felt relieved. It was doing the right thing by being honest. It would not be punished for telling the truth.

"You aren't ever going back there Bucky." The angel spoke softly but firmly, with the kind of voice that belonged to an angel, one that would make people believe no matter what his said, no matter how unbelievable his speeches. If the angel said you were going to survive the worst the devil would throw at you, then you would survive, for you would have no choice.

Bucky smiled up at him. This was its chance. This was its opportunity. It could not believe the kindness it was offered, but at the same time it was unable to help trusting the angel. This was its chance.

"You remember me?" The angel asked. It nodded.
"You were my mission..." It frowned, and then nodded. "I was in hell before. I remember. I was tied to a table, and they had...they had cut me open. You came back for me. You carried me.. you led me over the fire. You pulled me from the flames."

"Yeah I did Buck." The angel was smiling, and it knew that it was doing well. It was remembering, and that was good. It could remember other things to, all of its sins. It remembered kneeling at a confessional, back before, when it had been human. It remembered knowing then that its little faults would never be forgiven, and this, this was so much worse. It closed its eyes, not deserving to see the angel's smile, knowing that if it looked at its hands it would see them covered in blood.

"My guardian angel." It offered reverently, voice shaking with respect.
"Always Bucky. Someone's got to keep your sorry ass out of trouble."

"I'm sorry." It began. There were so many sins. So many mistakes and so many horrors, and it did not want to begin. It had to, but it could not easily find the words.
"It's okay-" The angel interrupted, and a glass was pressed against its lips. It sipped the cool liquid, felt the water healing the painful knot inside of it. The angel was full of mercy and kindness, and it was so grateful to know it. It just had to know how to start.

It took a breath, then opened its eyes, selfishly wanting to see the angel's expression one last time. The angel was frowning a little, concerned, but smiled as he caught its eye. It closed its eyes again, and licked its lips.
"I need to tell you what happened."

"You can tell me anything Bucky." The angel promised. "There's nothing that you can say that's gonna make me hate you."

That seemed like a big promise, but the demon could recognise its chance.
"Before hell...before what happened, I remember you. You were always there."
"Yeah, I was..." The angel's hand was still on top of its own, brushing his fingers over the demon's hands. The demon moved its hands away, knowing how stained it was.
