(OP) You are destroying me. :D David is a wonderfully terrible contrast to Katie, and everything about David/Bucky is bad in the good way. Verbal humiliation, excellent -- verbal humiliation regarded as factual statements Bucky's heard before, but intruding on his thoughts nonetheless, making his hand shake, inexpressibly excellent. Every detail of the abuse David obliges Bucky to suffer is an arrow to the heart. I love a) that Bucky sees himself as the provocateur who inspires violence in David instead of David as a sadistic motherfucker, but that b) at the same time his instinct was that David did this shit to his girlfriend too, like some part of him gets it, and he was so much more protective of her than himself, and c) that Bucky knows his unconditional sexual compliance is what excites David to this, but doesn't change it, because he can't conceptualize anything else. Just terrible. David, by the way, is an excellent depiction of the kind of person who is drawn to vulnerability as a marker of easy prey. He sees Bucky will let him do anything, so he hurts him. And that Bucky sees it more as him generating those responses in David is, agh!

And then the terrible twist of the knife is that by contrast Sam is so loving and tender and caring and it's STILL NONCONSENSUAL. In fact, in some ways it's harder for Bucky to bear, as you describe, because feigning consent prevents him from dissociating. That kind of complication is a stroke of genius on your part. Everything hurts, I'm dying, etc. I can't tell if I'm yearning for Sam and Steve to figure out the truth, especially the things they've done to Bucky that he's actively hated, or if I am deeply afraid. Prooobably both.

this fic is so good at showing the effect of abuse on people. Like how hard it is to tell the difference between someone who didn't mean to hurt you, and to admit that someone really did mean to hurt you and not realizing that neither situation is your own fault.

I still find it hard to reconcile not only the idea that someone being mean to me is in no way my fault, but that said person might just, in general, be a terrible person doing it on purpose.

I'm glad Bucky's reaction there felt realistic. Bucky has the insight to recognize that his unconditional sexual compliance is what excites David to this, as OP so perfectly put it, but not the insight to recognize that that makes David, as you say, a terrible person. Bucky's unconditionally sexually compliant with Sam and Steve too, of course, but it doesn't make them want to hurt him (although they do hurt him) because they're not abusers.

Thank you, OP! You are such a pleasure to write for. <3 Bucky got (relatively) lucky with Katie, but there's just no way that someone with no concept of consent, someone unable to say no to sex wouldn't attract people like David as well. I'm so glad David was recognizable as someone drawn to vulnerability as a marker of easy prey. The behavior here is extreme (because trash party), but overall he's meant to be a familiar sort of monster.

Poor Sam! As much as he and Steve are doing something awful to Bucky, Bucky is (inadvertently, but still!) doing something awful to them. He is making them into rapists - or at least, that's how they're going to feel, because how could they not? - and in its own way that's a hideous violation of their dignity, their decency. I'm glad Sam came across as loving and tender and caring here, even through Bucky's distorted perception. Not long, now, before the truth comes out.

Next up: there was a request for more of Sam and Steve having kinky sex with Bucky, who thinks he's being punished. As you put it, to them it's hot and intimate, and Bucky flawlessly performs like he isn't freaked the hell out.

Well. Almost flawlessly.

Oh yes, I really like this comment about Sam and Steve. They think they're checking for Bucky's consent, and he thinks they want him to feign wanting it. So they'll get to torture themselves afterward, feeling like rapists, learning about all the pain they caused, wondering what question they failed to ask that would have cleared everything up before it began. It's no one's fault, but everyone gets fucked over. And that's beautiful.
