It just twists the knife that he is able to be kind to himself in some ways (seeking out consolation when he feels bad about his arm), but has this massive blind spot that's causing all this horrible dissonance. YES GOOD. <3 I love stories where Bucky is broken - let's face it, I'm easy, when it comes to torturing my favorite characters I love everything - but I thought it would almost be worse here if he . . . wasn't, particularly? Yes, he's dealing with the after-effects of trauma, but he's trying so hard to take good care of himself, and his recovery has come so far. And it makes his performance of consent more believable, I think, because in other ways he's doing so well, and his personality is altered but intact. There's just, as you say, this ONE THING . . .
