At some point, Bucky is subjected to severe sleep deprivation before they rape him. The rape is extra levels of horrifying because he's woozy, fading in and out, and can't track time or reality the way he should.

+ he hallucinates nightmarish things happening to him and can't be sure what's real and what isn't

+ he actually falls asleep mid-rape, after which is rapists are even crueler to him to keep him awake

Imagine if whatever Steve would want to do to help Bucky relax enough to sleep - rubbing his back, a snack of chocolate milk and peanut butter toast, boring nature documentaries, quiet conversations about absolutely nothing - is absolutely counterproductive, because that's how the trash parties started. The WS would be gently lulled to sleep in a soft, comfy bed, his forehead stroked, maybe even a hummed lullaby - and then next things he knows he's waking up in the middle of a gangbang. Maybe he didn't know what they were up to because of the wipes, or maybe he knew each time but they drugged him so he'd fall asleep anyway

Or maybe he was so tortured with exhaustion that they didn't even need to drug him -- at some point, the handful of sleep they'd let him snatch seemed worth the gangbang that would ensue.

If this was a pattern of abuse, rather than a single incident of Bucky being raped while severely sleep deprived, any suggestions as to the reasoning behind it? (Not that gratuitous HYDRA sadism isn't always a valid reason.) Asking for a friend. :)

Sleep dep is very effective at creating a malleable personality; your executive functions really need adequate sleep. A bad experience that would be unpleasant but cope-able when well-rested can be nightmarish and shattering if you haven't slept in six days. Basically sleep dep is a force multiplier for torture in general.

So in other words, exactly the kind of tactic Hydra loves.
