We will return to this with a vengeance, because - Bucky's both right and wrong here, isn't he? On the one hand, you have the obvious truth that an institutionalized power imbalance can warp the behavior of otherwise reasonable people: as Terry Pratchett put it, "There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do." The kind of power Hydra exercised over the Asset was too extreme not to be toxic, not to corrupt. (And of course Bucky sees the source of corruption as himself, rather than the setting, because trash party.) On the other hand, Bucky has ZERO INSIGHT into David's personal life, or his relationship with his girlfriend, and the same is true for his handlers - he doesn't really know if they were otherwise good people or not. Pratchett's "normal kindly family man" is one type of torturer, certainly, but personally I suspect Bucky underestimates the number of Hydra goons who were abusive assholes in other spheres of life as well. Bucky sees the problem as himself, and is consequently convinced that David wouldn't beat or rape a real person, but - there's no reason to think that's true.
