Yes, because if you determinedly *don't* think about it, you can ignore how fucked-up everything is. Then you can go about your day as if you hadn't just actively contributed to, y'know, torture and war crimes and stuff.
Because if you *do* think about it … well, then you need to acknowledge that you're doing something awful, and even maybe do something about it. Something that might be costly or dangerous or disrupt your regular-person life in uncomfortable ways. Even just holding the thought in your head, that you might be doing something that doesn't hold up to your own scrutiny, is uncomfortable. Far easier just to pretend to yourself that you don't see it, that this is normal, that there's nothing you can do anyway, so making a fuss is pointless …
