Oh, and also, regarding your point: Steve's acceptance of James at the end, his willingness to let Bucky go, just slayed me.

Yeah, that part was hard. I think Steve, up to the point of walking out of the elevator, wasn't quite ready to accept James and give up on Bucky. After all, he'd spent all these years thinking about Bucky. But between Nat's talk and actually seeing "live and in technicolor" what it meant to have his Bucky back -- *that* was the moment when he realizes that (a) James is his own person, (b) his relationship with James is also valuable, and (c) maybe a perfect facsimile of Bucky wasn't what he wanted after all. At the heart of it, Steve is a selfless person, so once he realizes what's happening -- it's just not something that he can do to James. That's SOOO much worse than ordering James to have sex with him. And if it means consigning Bucky to the past ... well, them's the breaks.

(One of the things that always gets to me about Steve is both how selfish and how selfless he is. ugh Steve feels.)

All the Steve feels! I'd never quite articulated it that way to myself, as selfishness/selflessness, but I love it. It can't be fixed, losing Bucky, it is just inescapably sad, but now Steve has James, who is also worthy of love. Good for Steve for realizing what he's doing to James, and realizing that it's unacceptable. Good for him for realizing that this new relationship is just as deep as the old one, he just hadn't let himself see it for what it was.

God, "Out of the Dead Land" was the story that dragged me into this fandom, and "Memory" pretty much ripped my heart out. I remember that line. So good.

Also I forgot to mention how much I love the way Steve has the insight about himself that hopefully he'll one day be able to appreciate applies equally to James . . . in bed. ;) To care for James, to love him and trust him and help him -- that is a pleasure. A duty, certainly, but something he *wanted* to do. Surprise, Steve, that's sort of how Asset-identified James is going to feel about sexytimes with you!

- using "it" for the Asset, even while treating him like a person.

- Steve pushing limits because he knows he has all the power (and responsibility) and just *has* to be fucking attentive.

- the stark contrast between the teasing and powerplay during the sex and the gentle motions of trust once they stop -- especially all those little lines about how Steve is bound to the Asset, too -- "silly, but the Asset likes it, and resistance is fucking futile", "He can't keep apologizing; it freaks the Asset out" and all of the things that the Asset does to assert his own power -- pulling on Steve's arm, calling Steve an idiot, not offering to deal with Steve's hard-on, choosing to sleep on the floor... *rolls around in happy feelings* Their relationship is such trash and yet so tender. <3333

Anyway you hit so many of my trash and characterization buttons, I ... I can't even. :D~~~

(And yes, re: Steve reaching an understanding about the intersection between obligation and desire -- when I got to that part I was like "good job, Steve!" I love it when characters surprise you mid-writing.)

Ahaha wonderful, I'm glad it hit your buttons. :D :D :D You just know it wouldn't take the Asset long to figure out that "I like it when you . . ." is a spectacularly effective way to get this handler to do anything. But then I picture Steve living quite happily, for the most part, under the benign tyranny of What the Asset Likes. ;)

That is. I can't. That is UNBELIEVABLY hot. I am blushing so hard and also kind of screaming quietly into my pillow. Thank you SO MUCH HOLY SHIT. I have very little visual imagination, if that makes sense, like when I wrote that first line I didn't have any particular image in my head, and now I can't stop STARING at it HAVING FEELINGS. Steve's hand on the back of Bucky's neck, holding him down; the way Steve's body just curves over him, like shelter and ownership all at once; and Bucky's hand curled in the sheet, the smudge of his eyelashes against his cheek, god, it's this incredibly provocative pose and he looks so peaceful. AND THEN the second one, the way Steve's touching his face, it's so tender I LITERALLY CANNOT HANDLE IT, and Bucky just looks blissed out and accepting and you know he could snap that cuff in an instant but LOOK AT HIM just taking it . . .
