Chatter post

For all your discussion needs.

Ground rules:
- Try to keep it loosely trash party related, or at least Cap fandom related.
- Disagreement is fine, nastiness is not.
- Being offended is not carte blanche for nastiness.
- Trashmeme ground rules apply. Read at your own risk, no romanticizing your noncon garbage, no wank about the moral acceptability of noncon kink.
- Body shots, sniper shots, and tetanus shots are all available at the open bar. Party like it's 2014, kids.

DA In addition to the kink-wiki mentioned above, I've also found these two sites to be very helpful in terms of general information.

question about types of trash

(Anonymous) 2014-12-09 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Maximoff-and-Hydra related trash considered relevant to the meme? From what we've seen so far, it seems like they're undergoing pretty similar treatment to what Bucky went through, and they were in the thing at the end of CATWS...

Maybe ask the trashmod on the admin ask post? They're the one who has the final say.

Personally, I'd really prefer to wait until after Age of Ultron comes out for those characters, since we don't know how the MCU is going to handle them. We only have one very short scene and a trailer to go on.

Seconded. I'd prefer to wait until we actually know the characters before trashing them. Otherwise, what we'll get is just generic weepy rapebait porn, and that's not what I'm here for.

Thirded. We could be dealing with another Mandarin fakeout, where the Maximoffs haven't been imprisoned by HYDRA at all.

I thought it was already canon that they havent been imprisoned. The actors both said the twins volunteered at sdcc (which is juts sooooo problematic idek where to start) but basically Im pretty sure they weren imprisoned in aou

I'm pretty sure Skye just won the Bucky Barnes Thumbs-Up Award for exceptional skill at dealing with trash who think they're being romantic.

("Wait, is that autographed"? Coulson says in the background.)

They're in cells at a HYDRA facility in the teaser. As that's the only MCU canon we've got to work with until AoU is released - they're imprisoned by HYDRA.

It sounds like semantics but imprisonment doesn't have to be forcible. Individuals can have themselves committed to a secure hospital for treatment of a variety of mental and physical disorders, for example. Therefore I really hope what you find sooooo problematic is the possibility of HYDRA's involvement and not that anyone would volunteer for treatment in a secure facility if they were scared they might hurt themselves or other people.

Likewise, Steve volunteered for the super-soldier program. So, until AoU is released, no one can say conclusively if the MCU!Maximoffs were born super-powered or consented to be engineered that way. Not even the actors can say that as they haven't seen a theatrical cut of the film yet.

In conclusion, I'm so on-board with waiting. It'd be really, really good to wait. May isn't that far away. Let's wait.

I'm the one who said its problematic that the volunteered and I just wanted to add that I have no problem with them not wanting to hurt people what I find problematic is the fact that they made two characters who are Jewish/Romani (and also children of hoocaust survivors) in the comics volunteer to essentially be experimented on by neo nazis which just makes me super uncomfortable

Is there any good dark!Steve out there?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I know dark!good guys are not on-topic for the dumpster, but is there any good stuff out there? I've read some Winter Soldier!Steve, which is sometimes done well, and some really abysmal evil!Steve where he's wildly OOC, but I'm incredibly curious to see if there's any good stuff out there. After all, his history (the beat-up weird kid with a lot to prove, the ball of frustration and rage suddenly given all the power he desperately wanted and never had) could be a villain origin story if it wasn't, you know, Steve Rogers.

Any recs?

The MCU and the comics are different universes. We don't know anything about Wanda and Pietro in the MCU yet.

Seconding this request! This fandom is severely lacking in dark!Steve, and I've been craving more ever since I read the Sometimes the Bad Guys Win AU stuff (which for the most part seems to have been deleted, RIP, sob). The fic w/ Bucky torturing some guy while Steve watched made me especially happy c:

...unless that's the OOC evil!Steve you were talking about, in which case...*disappears back under trash pile*

I've never read that one! Wonder where I can track it down.

I haven't read that before, too. (Kind of sad that I am too late to join the party, and some of the fics people rec have gone already.)

But do you start with the Politics section or go straight to the Watersports pages?

Re: question about types of trash

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but that's just the thing. They whitewashed Jewish/Romani heroes and made them into ~troubled~ neo nazi youth who volunteer for hydra experiments we know that much and that just makes me super uncomfortable. But hey whatever maybe AOU won't be as ://// as it seems rn we'll just see I don't want a long discussion that's not what the dumpster is here for

OP again: I've read that one. :) I may have to make it my mission to write some in-character dark!Steve...

Hey trash party -

I'm new, and I was wondering if there's anything the trash party generally considers gauche or in poor taste. I've noticed a number of posts recently that asked for "no ____ characterization" (and one thread that turned into an argument) so I wanted to know if I'm doing it wrong. It does sound like a lot of us are writing from life here, so it makes me nervous if what I'm putting out there is stepping on other people's land mines.

Re: dumpster etiquette

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If you mean the argument yesterday, I think people were mad about the idea that "Captain America wouldn't do ____" (when ____ was something that people saw as positive and supportive). Maybe people could have been less harsh but given what the conversation was about, I can see why it was hurtful to be told that Steve wouldn't do that.

In general, I think people just naturally get a little grumpy when they're always seeing a characterization that they don't like, but it's just people being grumpy, not that that characterization is against the rules. The only characterization rule as I understand it is not to write bad guys as good, or good guys as bad (including when it's done unintentionally, like the author is writing a good guy as raping someone, but the author doesn't realize it is rape; that would be shut down in a hurry).

"In poor taste" is like the definition of the trash party so no worries about that!

Thanks, that totally helps. 99% of what I've filled here I can't put anywhere else for a number of reasons, but first and foremost because disability is a huge part of my life. I really can't afford for people to think that I'm actually infantilizing myself or others (because sometimes people suck and don't get that fiction can be a safe outlet. They want to read everything as a Cry For Help or whatever :P) But yeah anyway I didn't want to upset people here either.

Rumlow

(Anonymous) 2014-12-12 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm uncomfortable with the growing trend of treating Rumlow as sympathetic/sometimes "nice"/the Asset's favourite handler. It seems like it's pushing on the boundaries of the rules and I personally like awful characters being awful rather than "in a bad situation".

On the other hand, I recognise that this is one of few places where the continuous-rape-porn background to make a lot of the plots work fits in, so.

Thoughts? Anyone else want to see some other Hydra peeps get their share of the limelight? Is this just a don't-like-don't-read situation?
