It's so depressing to watch Bucky's downhill progression; not just from defiance to compliance, but also into apathy -- like when he stops identifying the guards, because what does it matter? And I feel so terrible for Bucky trying to navigate the games they're playing with him, to maintain some kind of internal resistance even as they fuck hard with his mind. The mindfuckery is amazing, btw -- I love the way Mueller maneuvers Bucky into an unavoidable decision and then blames him for it. Fantastically trashy. You're doing a wonderful job of portraying his slide further and further into hopelessness.

Anger flared somewhere far away, but Bucky could feel it only distantly, as if it were coming from the bottom of a pit somewhere in his stomach. Mostly, he felt empty. These men had already seen him lie down and let himself be fucked; they’d already been inside him. It made no difference, really, which hole they used.

One thing that strikes me about this fill is that the purpose behind the rape is so obscure. Often in early Hydra fic Bucky figures out why they're torturing him, but here he has no clues to extrapolate from. And he's not even being subjected to traditional physical torture. It must be incomprehensible. He's been captured by his enemy, and all they seem to want to do is rape him. What a nightmare.

I have a thing for sounds-so-reasonable-but-is-ridiculously-manipulative underhanded domination. Like, Bucky knows there's something not quite right, but it's hard to put your finger on subtleties like that when you're getting fucking into submission, y'know?

Whoo, yes. The trick is, I don't think Bucky even considers this torture? I never got that sense from his narration. It is torture, a horrible kind of torture, but it doesn't involve knives and electricity and interrogations, and that's what he was expecting. But this is sex! It doesn't even hurt anymore, mostly! So I can easily picture him being really confused post-WS, even now that he understands what they wanted out of him. Could he have fought harder? Why didn't he? Why did he break so easily? And why did they choose that method to break him? Has there always been something so wrong in him?

It's the most terrible thing. If they were torturing him for information -- or even if he just understood the goal of the Winter Soldier project -- there would be some kind of small... validation. Some acknowledgement that who he is matters. The rape, though, is total dismissal and dehumanization. They don't give a shit about who he is, what he's done, what he knows. He could be any Joe Schmo off the street. He sees himself as their enemy; they see him as a fucktoy. What does that do to a person?

YES. This is completely true. Like, he doesn't have any visible wounds, and it doesn't even hurt, really, so he should be able to endure it, no matter how often it happens or what they say to him while it's happening.
