OP again. I had another idea for the clone thing actually - maybe there are TWO surviving Bucky clones and There Can Be Only One.
Maybe they fight over Steve? Maybe they work out some kind of schedule where one is out burning down Hydra bases and the other is in bed with Steve?
They try really hard not to let Steve find out but uh oh, he just walked in and there are two Buckys in one room. This is gonna be awkward...

I could see some great hydra trash with multiple Bucky clones (imagine, not only do they get raped by hydra goons but they are forced to rape each other and sometimes kill old and defective clones), BUT THEN

(when they're trying to keep the two-or-more-Buckys situation a secret)

Steve does something with one and mentions it to another, who doesn't seem to remember it, or one makes some recovery leap that the others don't and Steve notices, so he thinks there's some serious dissociation crap going on in Bucky's skull, but really it's just two or three whole separate Buckys who know different things and recover at different rates. They recognize this problem and they try really hard to keep it quiet and keep each other informed so Steve doesn't know, because the one thing they can all agree on is that Steve is the most important thing in the universe, AND THEN

(after Steve finds out the truth and agonizes over which one is the 'real one' and maybe it's one of them or maybe it's none of them, but none of them know for sure)

they all have some hot threesome/foursome/moresome sex with at least one Bucky who's almost all better and snarky, and one who's still traumatized and trying really hard to be sweet and earn everyone else's favor, or still traumatized and kind of dead eyed and determined to follow 'orders.'

Yes, yes to all of the things. Have you ever seen the movie The Prestige? It kinda feels like that haha
OOH and maybe one of the Buckys flirts with Natasha or Sam and the others are like 'wtf are you doing you slut you're gonna blow everything for us'

Have you read the "Ipseity" series by SkyIsGray? It involves a situation kiiind of like the one you described. Multiple Buckys (sorta), plenty of angst and trauma to go around, and with bonus excellently handled sci-fi psychology. (It's also honestly one of the BEST SERIES I'VE READ, so I highly recommend it!)

I haven't read it but I've heard of it, and it sounds beautiful :) This would be kind of like that, but with the added trouble of keeping track of multiple physical bodies, perhaps with different abilities and scars and things...

These two ideas are different enough to coexist, right?

update: i have now read (most) of ipseity (yes i've been doing that all day) and I was right and it is beautiful, and i was also right that these two ideas can coexist :)

additionally, i now have a burning desire to write this which wars with my limited time/ability.
