He's trying so hard to be unbelievably gentle, because this whole mess must hurt like hellfire but Bucky barely even seems to notice it. Maybe Steve tries to distract Bucky/himself by talking about all the good food he's going to make for Bucky once he's cleaned but actually he's trying to figure out where he can get the right doses and combinations of antibiotics without bringing anyone else in on this because he feels like he might die if anyone else touches Bucky in this state.

And maybe Bucky is just so used to being touched without permission, he's distraught by Steve's sadness - he doesn't understand it, I mean it's pretty common that he's bleeding and hurt, why is someone fussing over it so badly?

And maybe Steve actually breaks down crying,and it's Bucky who tries to comfort him in a clumsy way, making Steve feel even more helpless and guilty.
