Rules in brief: don't be a jerk except to fictional characters, warnings for particularly fucked-up garbage are nice but not required, thou shalt not judge the trashiness of thy neighbor's kinks unless thy neighbor is trying to pass off their rotting banana peels and half-eaten pizza crusts as a healthy romantic dinner for two, off-topic comments may be chucked out of the dumpster at management's discretion, management's discretion decrees that omegaverse, soulbond AUs, D/s-verse, non-superpowered AUs, and dark!good guys AUs are off-topic.

He will meticulously ask consent even for little things - "can I touch your hand". "Is it okay if I sit next to you in the car?" "Are you okay with having dinner with me in the room?". It becomes somewhat heartbreaking and obviously clear that this obsession with consent comes from Bucky not being okay with himself at all. And him feeling people can't possibly want to be around him.

Oh, man, the constant checking in - I have such a love for characters with OCD, based on my own crappy experiences - and Bucky's going to turn everything good and healthy about modern consent education into his own personal nightmare. He's working from the premise that he is toxic and people are in danger around him, even though they don't seem to realize it, so it's his responsibility to protect them. Like, finding out about the concept of withdrawal of consent, and then he can't go more than 5 or 10 minutes doing something (totally non-sexual, even) with someone before asking if it's still all right that he's there. "Do you - do you want to keep watching this with me? I could go and you and Sam could just finish it - No, it's okay, I'll go -" and sometimes he just removes himself wordlessly in the middle of something that seemed really relaxing and fun because he figures he's already inflicted too much of himself on others.

I imagine being the other person in this scenario could get pretty aggravating. Steve's just trying to enjoy a movie or hang out with Bucky and Sam and Natasha or whatever and every five minutes there's a "are you sure you still want me here? Are you sure? I can just leave... Are you really sure?" Steve has the patience of a saint, of course, but I could see him getting a little snappy at Bucky after a few days of that and then just feeling like THE WORST PERSON ON THE PLANET.

Oh, believe, I know how this kind of checking can get real old real fast. BUT IT'S THE ONLY WAY BUCKY CAN DO ANYTHING! And of course Steve is going to say something dumb - maybe even something he really thinks will help - and Bucky's going to take it the worst way possible and, great going Steve, here's a complex PTSD survivor just trying to accept that he's allowed to eat a whole cup of frozen yogurt in the company of his best friend and you were mean to him. They're both going to suffer so much! (And I don't mean to make this cracky when it's perfectly gutwrenching but somewhere along the line someone is going to point the finger at Sam for showing Bucky the websites that lead him on to "that 'Jumbler place', it's terrible for him!")

I know there's no reason to think Steve wouldn't adapt really well to modern technology, but - there's a fic by thesardine on ao3 where messed-up Bucky has a thing for Smurfs and Steve keeps calling them "snurfs." Like he actually thinks that's what they're called and I can't stop laughing about it.

Steve disapproves of Jumbler for upsetting Bucky.

eah, honestly it's meant be aggravating for the other person (that's sort of my jam). Because really, they love Bucky even if he killed hundreds of people, and took as many hydra dicks. And they tr to explain that, but Bucky won't have it.

So they have to sit through something really upsetting for both of them.

And yeah, it would be amazing if his partner did go to breaking point and snapped...because hell, that would be such a minefield.

And add to that, with Bucky being so neurotic about consent, soime of that would transfer to his lover, too, and they'd eventually start asking consent for everything, too (especially as they find out more about the abuse, so it's a messed up vicious circle)
