Dumpster #4: I Don't See How That's a Party

Okay, kids, you know the drill. Don't be a jerk except to fictional characters. Warn if you want, but read at your own risk, because [community profile] hydratrashmeme is about as far from a safe space as you can get. Garbage we like: noncon, whump, aftermath, violence, mind control, inappropriate uses of Bucky Barnes' metal arm, bad guys doing dirtybadwrong things to your faves. Garbage you should find a different trashcan for: a/b/o, D/s-verse, soulbonds, mundane AUs, OOC evil!good guys doing dirtybadwrong things to your faves, rotting leftovers dressed up as a romantic gourmet meal. Nothing wrong with 'em, but this isn't the crowd you should be pitching to if you're trying to sell Brock Rumlow as anything but a human dumpster fire.

Link your fills on the fill post, post unprompted fills as replies to a header comment so the wall o' text is collapsible, and let me know if you're interested in helping out with the Pinboard archive.

For your consideration: https://archiveofourown.org/works/9034580

While it doesn't strictly conform to the prompt beyond the main theme, I found this fic a few days ago and--okay. I don't think any fic has ever so completely and utterly devastated me before. The opening paragraphs weren't totally convincing but I stuck with it and man, I am so glad I did...except for the part where I keep remembering the ending at random moments during the day and immediately feel my eyes welling up. This fic. This fic.

I ... I was not ready for the end... Remind me not to read sex addiction fics. ://///

Yeah it's...not a particularly happy fic, and given the fact of Steve's sex addiction he's not exactly canon Steve - closer to a dark!Steve or a mirrorverse Steve than anything else - but there was something about that specific flavour of horribleness - a Bucky who struggles with communication versus a Steve who struggles to listen beyond what he wants to hear in order to get off - that really stuck with me.

Sure, it's nowhere near in-character for canon Steve, but I like reading fics along the lines of "what if things go horribly wrong?"'and this really hit the spot for me, sorry if I didn't warn for that more adequately.

Yeah, I think I kept reading because I wanted them to fucking talk it out, but .... Steve really didn't. Even after Bucky was basically so damn explicit and understanding. I understand a certain degree of selfishness on Steve's part, but that was just too much for me.

Out of curiosity, have you read Uberrima Fidei? (http://archiveofourown.org/works/4341182) It hits a lot of the same "Steve doesn't realize what's going on for Bucky", but with... a more hopeful end? And also less sex addiction.

AYRT

For me, the main thing that struck me was the new take on the 'conditioned to behave a certain way during sex' trope; there's so much fic involving the miscommunication around Bucky having been conditioned that way, whether it's submissive/passive or aggressive/violent, with the latter often ending badly for Steve and with varying degrees of resolution. So it was interesting to see it the other way around, with Steve having been the one 'conditioned' by his addiction, and how that played out.

Steve's lack of proper communication was definitely frustrating, though, so I can totally understand where you're coming from and why it wasn't to your tastes. I'm hoping - but not necessarily /expecting/ - that the sequel offers some kind of resolution, or at least steps in the right direction, since one of my main interests in trash-fic is the aftermath, and how the characters deal with the fallout, and I can imagine that based on the ending the fallout here's going to be pretty big.

I have read that fic before, yeah. Thanks for reminding me of it, though; it's a great one.
