Dumpster #4: I Don't See How That's a Party

Okay, kids, you know the drill. Don't be a jerk except to fictional characters. Warn if you want, but read at your own risk, because [community profile] hydratrashmeme is about as far from a safe space as you can get. Garbage we like: noncon, whump, aftermath, violence, mind control, inappropriate uses of Bucky Barnes' metal arm, bad guys doing dirtybadwrong things to your faves. Garbage you should find a different trashcan for: a/b/o, D/s-verse, soulbonds, mundane AUs, OOC evil!good guys doing dirtybadwrong things to your faves, rotting leftovers dressed up as a romantic gourmet meal. Nothing wrong with 'em, but this isn't the crowd you should be pitching to if you're trying to sell Brock Rumlow as anything but a human dumpster fire.

I'm trying to write this out. I have a rough outline that I'm trying to fill in, right now, but no promises on a finished fic.

So, Bucky is super uncomfortable with his body, so he is in serious, serious denial about some of the changes he can't help noticing, like those pesky skin folds between his legs that he absolutely will not touch.

Steve respects Bucky's boundaries, so Steve does not touch anywhere Bucky tells him not to touch, and Bucky is very careful about what he lets Steve see, let alone touch, so Steve isn't aware of some of the changes to Bucky's anatomy. Steve loves all of Bucky's body, because it's Bucky's body, and he will express that love in any way Bucky will let him.

When Bucky goes into labor, he has no idea what's happening of course, so all he knows is that he's getting abdominal cramps that are getting worse and worse. At first he tries to ignore them, assuming they'll go away like the (Braxton-Hicks) cramps he's been getting for the last few weeks. Steve notices Bucky is uncomfortable after the first few cramps, but Bucky tells him he's fine and the cramps will go away soon, like they did the last few times. Steve asks him about these "last few times" that he's just hearing about now, and Bucky brushes him off. Bucky is still readjusting to normal food, and there's so much food in the future to adjust to, so sometimes his digestive system acts up, like a few moths ago when he was vomiting all the time. Steve is placated for the moment, but starts getting concerned when the cramps start getting worse and more frequent. This is about the point when Bucky starts screaming with each new cramp.

Steve calls Tony, because he doesn't know what to do. Tony advises him that it's probably a kidney stone, and then tells him to call Sam. The end of that conversation went like this:
“Cap, I handle hardware and software," Tony said. "Sounds like your Russian Robo RealDoll has a wetware issue. That's Wilson's department; he's the paramedic. But since you're asking, it's probably a kidney stone. Pepper got one last year. Said it hurt worse than Extremis.”
“Okay, kidney stone. Got it. Thank you.” Steve let out a relieved breath.
“You're welcome," Tony replied. "And call Wilson. I'm a mechanic, not a doctor.”

Steve calls Sam, who comes over to check on Bucky.

While he's waiting for Sam, Steve looks up the treatment for kidney stones on his phone, which is painkillers, fluids, and waiting. Painkillers don't work that well on either of them, which leaves fluids and waiting.

Steve tells Bucky that he probably has a kidney stone, which sets both their minds at ease. Kidney stones are as old as dirt. They can handle that. Steve gives Bucky some water and turns on the TV for a distraction from the pain.

Sam arrives, and Bucky is uncooperative. Sam says he doesn't need to do a physical exam, just questions and answers for now. Sam is quite familiar with kidney stones, since it is a common problem in troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan who tend to be chronically under-hydrated. After the next cramp hits, Sam suggests that Bucky should take a bath to relax, if he feels comfortable doing so. Baths are one of the few things Bucky likes, so he agrees. Bucky heads off to take a bath, leaving Steve and Sam to talk.

Sam warns Steve that there are plenty of other things that could be causing the cramps, from appendicitis to bad gas pain, and Bucky really needs a proper exam and possibly a trip to the hospital. Steve reminds Sam that Bucky won't let any doctor near him, and hasn't had a proper exam at all since he showed up at Steve's door almost two years ago. Sam reminds Steve that something like this was bound to happen sooner or later, and at some point he'll have to get medical treatment whether he likes it or not. They compromise on calling Natasha.

While they are waiting for Natasha, there is a knock on the door. Natasha doesn't knock, so they don't know who it could be. Turns out it's the local police. A neighbor called in a concern about all the screaming. That scene goes something like this:
There was a knock on the door.
“Natasha doesn't knock. Did you call anyone else?” Sam asked.
Steve shook his head and headed for the door.
“Brooklyn PD!” A voice called from the other side of the door.
Steve opened the door. “Can I help you, officer?” he asked.
“We got a call from a concerned neighbor about screaming coming from this address,” the uniformed police officer stated.
From the bathroom Bucky let out another yell that echoed through the apartment.
“I see what they meant,” the officer said. “Everything all right, here?”
“My boyfriend is passing a kidney stone,” Steve answered.
The officer winced. “Ouch. My wife's had a couple of those. Said it hurt worse than childbirth, and we have three kids.”
“Wow,” Steve winced in sympathy.
“Better get back to him,” the officer continued. “Remember, if you need it, help is always only a 911 call away.”
“Thanks, officer, but I think we've got it.”

Steve goes back to the bathroom to check on Bucky. He tries to talk Bucky into letting Sam take a quick look at him, but Bucky refuses. Steve keeps Bucky company in the bathroom for a bit. Sam joins them, but Bucky closes the shower curtain first so Sam can't see him. Sam asks more questions, which Bucky reluctantly answers. Steve brings Bucky more water. Bucky has another cramp. The bath water gets cold, so Bucky kicks Steve and Sam out of the bathroom so he can dry off and get dressed.

Sometime while they were in the bathroom, Natasha arrived. Steve still can't figure out how she gets into the apartment. They found her sitting on the couch watching the Great British Bake-Off when they emerged from the bathroom. Steve goes to the kitchen to get some snacks and beverages. Sam fills Natasha in on the situation.

Bucky emerges from his bedroom in his usual three layers of clothing, takes one end of the couch without a word, and curls up around a pillow. He stays there for the next three hours, as the cramps get more frequent and progressively worse. Steve fusses over Bucky. Bucky takes off one of his layers of clothing because he is overheating. Sam does his best to observe Bucky for new symptoms after he refuses to answer further questions. Sam also reminds Bucky that they don't know for sure it's a kidney stone, so he needs to tell them about any new symptoms.

Bucky starts nodding off on the couch, so Natasha suggests that he take a nap, and volunteers her lap as the ideal spot to rest his head. Bucky agrees to a nap, but prefers his bed to the couch. He and Natasha move to the bedroom. Bucky has overheated again, so he takes off another layer of clothing. He's down to a tee shirt and shorts when he climbs on the bed, wraps himself around the pillow from the couch, and snoozes with Natasha running her fingers through his hair. Steve checks in on them periodically. Sam wishes he had a Star Trek medical tricorder. He texts Tony to put it on the wish list.

Now that the cramping is more predictable, Bucky is still uncomfortable but no longer screaming with each cramp. Natasha has also been coaching him on breathing through the pain. They stay there for a few hours, Bucky trying to rest and Natasha running her fingers through Bucky's hair with one hand and reading reports on her tablet with the other. Then Bucky's water breaks. That scene goes something like this:
Bucky was resting on the bed, curled tight on his side around a pillow, with his head resting in Natasha's lap. Natasha was carding her fingers through his hair.
Bucky groaned and shifted, clutching the pillow tighter.
“You okay?” Natasha asked.
“Wet,” he replied.
Natasha looked over and saw the wet patch on the back of his shorts. “Don't worry, we'll get you cleaned up.”
Bucky shook his head, “Don't wanna move.”
“Okay, we'll just stay here for now.”
Bucky made a whining noise in the back of his throat. “Can't believe I did that.”
“Give yourself a break,” Natasha soothed. “Your body is trying to flush out a piece of rock. So what if you leak a little.”
“Didn't even feel myself go,” he said.
“That's all right,” she replied.
Bucky settled, then tensed as another cramp hit. Natasha continued to stroke his head.
Natasha couldn't shake the sense that she was missing something. She looked him over again, cataloging all of his symptoms. Natasha's eyes widened as an utterly absurd thought passed through her head. No, she thought to herself. That's impossible. Then again, Hydra had him for a very long time.
“Bucky?” Natasha said softly.
“Mhm?” Bucky murmured.
“Bucky, I need to check something. May I put my hand on your abdomen over your shirt?” Natasha asked him.
Bucky shook his head and pulled his knees into his chest tighter.
“Do you not want me touching you, or do you not want to move?” she inquired.
“Second one,” Bucky answered.
“Okay. You don't have to move. I don't need to see, just feel,” Natasha replied.
“Okay,” Bucky agreed.
Natasha carefully slid her hand down Bucky's chest over his shirt to the gentle swell of his abdomen. She softly pressed her palm down. Something inside him pushed back.
Oh, god, Natasha thought to herself.

Natasha panics. Natasha never panics, but she is panicking now. She quickly texts Steve and Sam, so she won't alarm Bucky. Steve and Sam come running in, also panicking. Natasha decides they can't all be panicking at once, so she forces herself to remain somewhat calm and tells Bucky what she thinks is happening to him. Bucky does not take the news well. Sam suggests they should call 911 and get Bucky to a hospital immediately. Bucky refuses. Natasha says they should stay at the apartment, because it's too late to try to move him.

Sam starts Googling labor and delivery procedures, because he may have learned it as part of paramedic training, but it wasn't something he ever encountered in a combat zone.

Natasha tells Bucky that he'll be okay. She then orders Steve to go wash his hands and bring all the clean towels to the bedroom. Meanwhile, Sam has slipped into calm medic mode and goes off to scrub in as well. Steve returns with the towels, still looking completely bowled over. Sam returns as well, and takes over giving the orders. Steve helps Bucky up into a sitting position and over to the edge of the bed. Natasha slips away to wash up as well. Bucky refuses to remove his shorts. Steve says Bucky can cover himself with a towel, but the shorts have to come off. The shorts come off.

Sam explains pushing positions and breathing techniques to Bucky as quickly as possible because the contractions are coming faster and faster, and his body will start pushing whether he's ready or not. Sam, Natasha, and Steve help Bucky find a comfortable (for the moment) pushing position with Steve propping Bucky up for support. Natasha brought back a damp washcloth from the bathroom and wipes some of the sweat from Bucky's face and neck.

Bucky starts pushing, and has to change positions twice to get his hips open wide enough for the baby to fit through. He's gone back to screaming in pain. As the head is crowning he feels himself tear into his scrotum and stops pushing for a moment as he is reduced to sobbing uncontrollably from the new pain. On the next contraction he starts pushing again and the head is out. Sam catches the baby's head and checks around the neck. The cord is to one side of the baby's neck, and appears to be going over the baby's shoulder and down its back. Sam shifts the cord away from the neck as much as he can, then Bucky is back to pushing. Sam guides the baby's head as the shoulders rotate. One more push and the baby is out. Bucky collapses. Sam wraps the baby in a towel and cleans off its face. The baby starts crying.

Natasha retrieves Steve's first aid kit, dental floss, and a clean knife. Sam ties off the umbilical cord and cuts it once it stops pulsing. Bucky passes the placenta, which is bundled up and placed aside to deal with later. Sam hands the baby off to Natasha to be cleaned up. Sam explains to Bucky that he has to sew up the tearing. Thankfully, Steve's first aid kit includes surgical sutures and topical numbing spray. Sam uses about four times the recommended amount of numbing spray. Bucky still feels the stitches going in.

Steve and Sam get Bucky cleaned up as best they can. They wrap him up in the remaining clean towels and get him settled in bed. Natasha brings the now clean baby over and places it on Bucky's bare chest. Natasha guides the baby's head so it latches onto Bucky's nipple and starts nursing, then moves Bucky's arms around to correctly support the baby.

Steve retrieves another blanket to make an enclosed spot on the bed for the baby to sleep once it has finished nursing. Bucky starts drifting off to sleep before the baby is finished, so Steve keeps an eye on them both. Once the baby has had enough, he carefully burps it. the baby spits up on Steve's shoulder. Steve doesn't notice. He then lays the baby in the makeshift bassinet on the bed.

Steve, Sam and Natasha all collapse on the floor around the bed. They'll deal with cleanup, paperwork, and everything else once they've had a short rest.

SAM WITH A TRICORDER.

I don't know why that was the thing that stuck out to me most in this crazy awesome fill, but yeah. Sam bending over preggers!Bucky with a little gameboy-sized device all worried and calling for the captain, because this is Illogical.

Also, Natasha panicking. I loved that, it makes so much sense that she's terrified of pregnancies, especially ones that are supposed to be impossible.
