Dumpster #4: I Don't See How That's a Party

Okay, kids, you know the drill. Don't be a jerk except to fictional characters. Warn if you want, but read at your own risk, because [community profile] hydratrashmeme is about as far from a safe space as you can get. Garbage we like: noncon, whump, aftermath, violence, mind control, inappropriate uses of Bucky Barnes' metal arm, bad guys doing dirtybadwrong things to your faves. Garbage you should find a different trashcan for: a/b/o, D/s-verse, soulbonds, mundane AUs, OOC evil!good guys doing dirtybadwrong things to your faves, rotting leftovers dressed up as a romantic gourmet meal. Nothing wrong with 'em, but this isn't the crowd you should be pitching to if you're trying to sell Brock Rumlow as anything but a human dumpster fire.

Link your fills on the fill post, post unprompted fills as replies to a header comment so the wall o' text is collapsible, and let me know if you're interested in helping out with the Pinboard archive.

[Rules in full] [Round 1] [Round 2] [Round 3] [Fill post] [Chatter post] [hydratrashmeme Pinboard archive (maintained by [personal profile] greenkirtle)] [Round 4 in flat view (comments in non-threaded chronological order, most recent last)]

All prompts or fills that contain Infinity War spoilers must go on the Infinity War spoiler post until May 26th. Spoilers in the main dumpsters will be deleted.

Round 4 is closed; comments and fills in existing threads are still welcome, but all new prompts go to Round 5.

Can't catch a break even about WWII

Bucky did the dirty work that Captain America couldn't be implicated in. The records of his missions for the SSR in World War II were sealed until the early 2000s, when the CIA and SHIELD finally declassified them under the Freedom of Information Act. Some of his missions were pretty, uh, pretty unpleasant.

Nobody imagined that Steve Rogers might come back from the dead and read what Bucky had been doing behind his back so he wouldn't have to.

Nobody imagined that Bucky Barnes might come back from the dead and have to deal with disgusted peaceniks and Redditors hounding him on social media for justification on 70 year old wetwork missions. Bucky really does not need this.

Much as I love this prompt, I'm not sure how it's trash?

Trash things happening during the unpleasant missions?

(DA) Wouldn't that stray into the realm of dark good guy though?

(NA) I could see it working if it was along the lines of Bucky being ordered to do a honeypot type mission, or something along those lines.

Otherwise, if it's framed as 'Bucky under orders to do bad (aka violent, non-rape things) on behalf of the US' versus a present day Bucky coming to terms with having done terrible things under HYDRA, with a possible extra layer of also coming to terms with the sexual abuse he suffered as the Winter Soldier (aka coming to terms with viewing himself as a victim) which is complicated by the pre-WS files which frame him as a perpetrator.

Pretty sure that's comic book canon.

He's coming across this after being with Hydra, maybe he got the trash treatment there and is recovering? And is kinda busy dealing with that and really don't need to deal with people upset about WWII, too?

Like, it's a pretty open prompt. I'm not the OP, but I can see how there's space for trash.

Basically this. -OP

Or, like, what if after this stuff got declassified it made a HUGE scandal, like people were burning their grandparents' Bucky Bears in the street, and they made new Captain America movie where Johnny Depp played Bucky as this Once Upon A Time In Mexico style sociopath, and now he's WWII's dirty little secret, like, he's trying to deal with everything he went through with HYDRA and the dehumanization and the terrible things he was made to do, and when he tries to reach out to the other Avengers and anyone else authorized to interact with him, they don't see an okay guy who went through horrendous shit, they see a monster who got trained to be a better monster and for some reason thinks he should be loose in the general population, and he has no way to know they're not right.

Or, you know, whatever gets you going.

SA, Okay, I get it. And I really hope someone writes it.

Even Steve admits to having done things he doesn’t feel good about in the war that keep him up nights. What was Bucky doing that Cap couldn’t have any part in?

Not OP, but I would think after his first Hydra experience, Bucky could probably be convinced to employ some enhanced interrogation techniques on Hydra prisoners by unscrupulous superior officers.

From what I understand, I think OP's focus is on the trash Bucky might have been forced to inflict on others during the war. Maybe not rape, necessarily, but torture, execution, etc. Things that might be necessary or justifiable in a war, but that don't fit with the image of the American hero. I don't think it's Dark Good Guys if it focuses on Bucky's guilt and/or Steve's horror when he finds out.

Yes, please! This is a fantastic idea!

That being said, I'm not sure this is the trash pile you're looking for, OP.

Edit: Discussion on potential for trashiness noted.

Hope this gets filled!
