Fuckpotato WS loses limbs when he sleeps

Inspired by the recent fuckpotato fill, which had HYDRA amputating the Winter Soldier to keep it in line and for more powerful cybernetics.

So what if there's an added feature to all the new limbs, which is that the moment WS sleeps or loses consciousness, they deactivate and fall off? Only handlers know how to reattach the arms.

It makes a lot of sense from the HYDRA perspective -- the asset *has* to return to handler if it wants to sleep and not wake up completely helpless. They don't have to worry about the Asset falling into enemy hands, plus plus it automates a step during cryo prep.

Anyways, some potential ideas:
- early training where WS has to re-learn how to use all of his cybernetic limbs, with HYDRA-appropriate reward/punishment structure
- WS having to earn his limbs one at a time from his handler, in increasingly trashy ways
- after Insight, WS must return to handler, and Steve finds WS' limbs first, before finding the trash party
- alternatively, WS stays awake for 3 days and goes to Steve the moment he's out of the hospital. Does the WS then fall asleep and leave Steve to discover the horror? Or does the WS try to stay awake, growing increasingly erratic as he deals with various trash-related hallucinations?

Basically I just want anything with fuckpotato WS

As the Soldier limped away from the riverbank, there were two things he knew with absolute certainty: One, that that man was STEVE. It’s not just a bland name on a mission report, soon to be discarded or forgotten. It reverberates through his entire being, what little of him that remains his.

Two, that he will NOT go back to his handlers. It meant death, but at least it was better than going back to be used to kill, or used as a Fuck Thing, or simply put away in a dark drawer. No. He was free, and he had his limbs on him, so he will run for as long as he could.

The last time he escaped, he didn’t know about the failsafe. It was after a mission in Odessa. He’d foolishly gone to sleep in the drop ceiling of an office building, thinking he was safe. When he woke up, he’d found all of his limbs deactivated and detached around him.

He’d laid in that spot for three days before they found him. Then came the punishment.

After that, they never let him on a mission where he wasn’t within range of a handler who could deactivate his limbs with a button.

Except this time the handler is dead, the device buried in rubble.

So the Soldier will run, until sleep caught up. And when it does … well, the Soldier knew of many ways to end a life that were much faster than thirst and starvation.

The Soldier hid in a gas station bathroom and removed his five trackers, then went out for food. He needs to eat enough for 6 men in order to keep powering his limbs. The Soldier felt a rusty rumble in his throat as he chuckled. To stay on his feet, literally.

He had three days of full functionality before sleep dep starts kicking in. On the first day, he eliminated any HYDRA handlers and techs in the direct vicinity who could potentially have access to deactivation technology. On the second day, he went to the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives. He bought a train ticket to New York for the next day, then spent the night reading the books he’d checked out.

On the morning of the third day, drawn by his hazy memories from Before Before, haunted by all the wounds he’d inflicted on Steve, and because he knew that he would probably have to end his life somewhere in New York, he went to see Steve.

Omg, I almost missed this. I'm the author of the fuckpotato fill that OP was referring to, and I'm over the moon to see someone else writing in that verse! I'd love to see where it goes, great start so far!

(aa: sorry, another quick bit. Don't worry -- trash is coming down the pipe in the next part! :D)

----

The Soldier had intended to leave after confirming the health of Steve Rogers, but after the Widow left the cemetery, Steve pointedly turned in the Soldier’s direction.

The Captain was either better at counter-espionage than he’d accounted for, or the sleep deprivation was starting to affect his finer limb control.

The Soldier takes a deep breath against the fluttering behind his eyelids and stands up.

“Hello, Bucky.”

He’d read that name in the books last night, had tried to say it and found it foreign on his tongue. Steve knows his name better than he does.

“Hi, Steve.” He darts his eyes at the Falcon, who has remained standing discreetly in the distance as Steve approached. Steve stops a careful 10 feet away.

“I didn’t expect you to come find me.” Steve quirked an eyebrow. “I’m assuming that the fact I’m still alive means that you don’t want to kill me anymore.”

“I don’t remember much.” He blurted, to forestall the hope in Steve’s eyes. “And I need to leave.” He fingered the train ticket in his pocket. “Just wanted to see you first.” Drink in the sight of Steve. Have some good memories before the end.

Steve’s eyes are soft. “Thank you, Bucky, for coming. Where are you going? Fancy some company?”

That name, again. It sounds so natural coming from Steve. As if Bucky were a real person and not a name in a book, on a placard, on a tombstone.

With his limbs, he is the Soldier. Without, he is the Fuck Thing. They haven’t bothered wiping him much after the Surgery, and he remembers too much of being a lump with two holes to really believe he can be anything else. It’s impossible for him to be the Bucky.

But he’d like to try. He wants Steve to keep looking at him like this, like he is a real person. Even another day would be nice.

“HYDRA will be after me.” He hesitated, figuring out the right way to say this. “They have a way of neutralizing me with a single trigger.” Let Steve think it’s a trigger phrase, or a specialized weapon.

Steve’s grin was feral. “Why wait? We can go after them instead.” He nods toward the Falcon. “Sam, too, if you’re okay with that.”

The Soldier did a quick mental calculation in his head. With just himself, the time it’d take to eliminate all HYDRA threats is far greater than the time he can sustain functionality and wakefulness.

With Steve and the Falcon, the odds are significantly better.

He looks again at Steve’s open, hopeful face. Steve has faith in the Bucky, and the Soldier can use that to gain a powerful advantage against HYDRA. However, going on the offense means more likelihood of being recaptured before he could terminate himself. Doing so with allies also means more variables to keep track of as sleep-related impairment kicks in.

It also means spending more time with Steve, more time of Steve calling him Bucky.

He rolls his wrists and ankles, feeling the electrical shocks reverberate back up his torso. He smiles, showing his teeth. “All right. Let’s go.”
