The government lets him off the hook though, and Steve's not gonna punish him either, obviously. So he sets out to get hurt. It starts with bar fights he deliberately loses, and goes downhill (cough cough trashy) soon.

I'm fine with either

- trash past and retraumatizing (very deliberately, because for Bucky that's the worst, so it's what he deserves.)

- HYDRA never having abused Bucky sexually, and it's an entire new kind of horror.

Steve didn’t know how many of them were going to be getting up again, and was ashamed of the fact that he didn’t care. Nor had he pulled his punches as much as he normally tried to.

“Cap, thank fuck,” Rumlow said. “Here.” He tossed Steve his shield. “You want us to bag and tag these assholes?”

“Any of ‘em that’re breathing,” said Rollins, from where he knelt next to one. “So not him.”

Rumlow huffed a laugh. “Guess you were pissed.”

“Threatening my men does that,” Steve said shortly. They’d had STRIKE on a monitor, to make sure he’d be able to see them be shot if he resisted. But they hadn’t paid very good attention to it themselves, so Steve had been the first to notice when Mercer got her cuffs off.

Rumlow looked him over and asked, “You OK?”

“Fine now,” Steve said. “Let’s wrap this up.”

“You heard the Cap,” Rumlow said.

When the debriefing was formally over, Hill picked up her papers and left with Rumlow. Fury didn’t stand up, though, so Steve stayed where he was.

“I get the feeling you’re not telling us everything,” Fury said.

“I told you everything relevant,” Steve said wearily. “Our intel was bad, they got the drop on us, they didn’t have the records you wanted. Mercer should get a commendation. What else do you need to know?”

Fury’s eye could be piercing, but Steve had grown up with Sarah Rogers; he wasn’t impressed. “It surprises me that they didn’t try to get any intel out of you.”

Steve shrugged. “They were going to just kill us until they realized who I was,” he said. “We’d all be dead if they hadn’t wanted to pound Captain America for a while.”

His apartment wasn’t home, not the way Brooklyn had been home, and by the standards of the building he'd just left it wasn't any more secure than a little girl's diary, but it had a door that locked. Steve took the shield into the bathroom with him and turned the water on as hot as he could stand it and stood under the spray, rubbing soap into his skin, until he was forced out by the trembling edge of heat exhaustion.

Against the wall in the elevator, hands on his forearms and biceps and even ankles, one wrist cuffed to the goddamn wall, Steve had half a second when he panicked. He kicked without aiming and only the fact that he was vastly stronger than the guy on his leg let him get away with it.

The voice in his head, the one that told him when he was screwing up, said sharply, Get it together, Rogers, right fucking now! and Steve clamped down hard on his self-control. He could panic later. It wasn't the same anyway; the only thing really holding him down had been the desire to protect the STRIKE team.

The STRIKE team that was trying to arrest him now. Steve kicked again. Rollins grunted and collapsed.

In the end, Bucky found them.

They were in Eastern Europe, waiting on a train platform. Steve was discouraged and tired as hell and he knew Sam wasn't much better off; they were both staring blankly, waiting for their train so they could sit down and sleep for a few hours. When someone came up to stand beside him, Steve didn't even glance over. The presence at his left shoulder was so familiar that it took him more than a minute to realize why it shouldn't be there.

When he finally looked, Bucky was smirking at him. "Hey," he said. "I got some stupid here, you know who I should return it to?"

"Bucky," Steve said. "Bucky, my God." On his other side Sam muffled a surprised yelp, but Steve couldn't care about that.

Bucky's face gentled to a real smile. "Hey, Steve," he said quietly, and didn't flinch when Steve yanked him into a hug.

I stand before this meme a simple trashbaby with some wires seriously crossed. I watched Ant Man and read Birds of Paradise (http://archiveofourown.org/works/4486698) too close together.

What if HYDRA had gotten their hands on that shrinking technology? Sam Wilson could be made to fit into a totally normal bird cage and retrieved at little personal risk for trash purposes. HYDRA agents fighting over who gets to take him home for the weekend like an elementary class with the school goldfish.

(Could also be handy for containing recalcitrant brainwashed super soldiers when they're not on duty--stick them in a gerbil cage, maybe make them fight like scorpions. Doubles as another way to make Sam cry!)

TBH they could zap him back to normal for the trash, I'm more fussed about the decorative/helplessness thing in general than on him being bird-sized during the act.

Hydra trained Bucky early on to come on command, and they always made sure he came at least once during trash parties, no matter how vicious they got. Once he is free and has recovered enough to try sex with someone he actually loves (I'd prefer Steve or Sam, though anyone is fine except Nat or Tony - Bucky/Nat is my friendship OTP and romantic NoTP, and I just don't really like Tony). Unfortunately, every time he tries to have sex, even if he's not getting flashbacks or overtly freaking out, he still ends up too anxious and caught up in his head to come; sometimes he can't even manage to get hard, or gets hard for a few minutes only to go soft again a few minutes later for no reason he can figure out. I feel like this may have been prompted already, but I can't find it.

The set up: the Asset is deployed with a Strike team to a situation where, for whatever reason, they're out for long enough or in a situation where it's not feasible to have him wiped or frozen. I'm thinking snowed in to a tiny cabin and have to wait for extraction, their get away vehicle got destroyed far away enough or in a war zone so it takes a while for a pick up arrive, something like that. Just some situation where nobody's going anywhere and there's no mechanism to just put the Asset back under control.

Because, as we all know, the effectiveness of the wipes starts breaking down over time. Strike knows this too, they're not complete morons (Westfahl aside), so once they figure out that they're trapped with the Asset and a weakening degree of control over him, they back off on the trash. Or at least the violent parts. Because hey, they're snowed in, what the hell else are they supposed to do with no Netflix and no cell reception? But they don't want to get murdered in their sleep, so they're relatively gentle, thinking that's all they have to do to not lose control over the Asset.

And they're probably not going to get murdered, because pretty soon it's been long enough since a wipe that Bucky is starting to recover, a la your classic Bucky recovery fic, except without Steve &co's support and warm blankets, and Bucky's an absolute fucking mess as things start coming back together for him. He's starting to get intensely triggered by things that never used to bother the Asset, he's starting to put together the deep wrongness of being used like a thing, putting together that he's a person and this isn't what his life has always been. It probably starts small, so small that Strike doesn't really notice at first; things like avoiding touch, then shuddering when touched, escalating to full on panic attacks, etc, and it starts to get so bad that even Strike can't help but notice that the Asset is getting really fucked up. Maybe Bucky's coming back to himself enough to push back against violations of his boundaries, but he's only just starting to process esventy years of trauma as trauma and the ongoing triggers of being trapped with his rapists! With ongoing rape!

So what does Strike do about this? Feel bad that apparently the Asset is apparently a real person? (no of course not. Maybe Bucky even tries to bargain with one of them who seems nicer). Beat the shit out of the misbehaving Asset because he's obviously too fucked up having panic attacks to murder them? Gaslight the hell out of a recovering Bucky, playing for time until extraction by telling him that it's ok, they're his friends?

In my head, from one perspective this is one of those Strike-comedy fics where everyone is terrible but affably so, and from another perspective it's horror despair of Bucky being so close to being himself again but dealing with ongoing, unescapable triggers and trash.

when he was with HYDRA, Bucky wasn't supposed to want/not want, like/dislike things. So if he showed any signs of wanting/not wanting something, they'd do the opposite. Eventually he figured out that meant if he pretended not to want things he did want, they would give them to him (e.g. he wants human contact so he pretends to flinch away when someone grabs his shoulder and that makes them hold on tighter), and if he pretended to want things he didn't want (e.g. rape), then they won't draw it out as long.
And then he gets out, and he's still stuck in this act-opposite-of-what-you-want mindset and there is confusion and angst and most likely more trash (obviously).

But on the other hand, he doesn't seem to have the ability for a wide range of fawn response--back to the vault scene, he's been so tortured and wiped that he doesn't even have the capacity to conceive of something like " please don't hurt me" or cringing before Pierce slaps him.

So, dear trash friends: if Winter Soldier Bucky is so severed from his own trauma/the ability to conceive of non-torture, but he's intensely aware of the moods of people around him, how does Winter Soldier Bucky do fawn response and try to placate the abusers around him if your classic aim-to-please is off the table? Like maybe there are some super sadistic Strike goons who go from amiable to sadism in the blink of an eye (haay Gather Ye Rosebuds Rumlow) and some who go along with it but don't initiate on their own, but Bucky has no way of differentiating between them--how does he try to please or placate or figure out emotions if he can't come right out and invite non consensual sex on his own?

Combining existing garbage tropes in new and horrible ways:

- Before TWS, Steve was captured on a SHIELD mission and raped

- The Winter Soldier was forced to rape prisoners at least once

- Both Steve and Bucky are stoic jerks who avoid taking about past trauma until the truth comes out the hard way

The sequence of events: they start fucking, Steve's secret comes out, they salvage things and carry on, and THEN Bucky's secret comes out. And it actually destroys their ability to have a sexual relationship.

Steve realizes that Bucky was coerced as well and the guilt and shame were too overpowering for him to come clean on his own, which is the only reason it doesn't destroy their friendship too. But he can't. Not when Steve opened himself up and let Bucky fuck him, and Bucky went along with it, even after he KNEW what happened to Steve and how much trust that required. Not when their situations were so parallel that it's only by chance that Bucky wasn't one of Steve's assailants.

Bonuses: Bucky was never raped, except in the sense that being forced to commit the act is also rape. Steve demands to know what the hell they could threaten him with that wouldn't make him an absolute piece of shit for complying, and only relents after Bucky names some horrifying fate worse than death, like being put back into cryofreeze conscious for "noncompliance." Steve is carrying around a lot of shame and trauma of his own, which he would never have exposed to anyone he didn't think he could trust unconditionally. In the end, as with that one part of Jessica Jones, what truly tanks the relationship isn't what Bucky was forced to do, it's the breach of trust involved in keeping it secret.

The Winter Soldier is the Fist of Hydra, an emblem of its power, and a legend within its ranks. But, once you spend time with him off the field, it turns out he's also a sad-eyed guy who has no agency, and who has been subjected to a ton of sexual abuse throughout the decades.

I'm imagining the tension between these two aspects of the WS could generate a lot of hatred and violence and, particularly, homophobia. On the one hand, you've got scenarios like: the newbies on the team are in awe of the mythical Soldier, so the commander engineers a gangbang on Bucky. It's important for everyone to know the asset's place.

And on the other hand, there's stuff like: Hydra agents whose pride in the organization abhors tarnishing its symbols, and the Winter Soldier's a crucial symbol, so how do they feel knowing how degraded he's been? And his long sexual history with men, how much skill he has in pleasing any inferior grunt, does that disgust them? But of course they won't blame his rapists. It's all on Bucky for letting it happen.

I will take anything with any of these power dynamics.

So the mind wiping between missions means each time he's woken the soldier has to be told who he is right? What his mission is? What if sometimes between missions he's woken having been wiped, and told that he's some kind of in house Hydra prostitute? So when the others have their filthy way with him he wants to do it, wants to please them, because after all this is his job right? I mean, a prostutite that doesn't want to suck cock is not a very good prostutite and the soldier always wants to be the best at everything he does.
